Every country has a particular code that provides the proper etiquette and guidelines for taking care of their flags. No matter the quality and material of your flag, it will succumb to the elements of weather and other factors over time. An unkempt flag shows a lack of respect toward the country or a lack of standards for the people to whom it represents.
To increase the life of your flag and protect it from wear and tear, there are certain rules for maintenance that you must follow.
Here are a few tips that will help you retain the splendid condition of the flag and prolong its life in the years to come.
Continuous exposure to the sun will cause the colors in your flag to fade over time. While there’s no way you can protect your flag from fading over time, there are some things that can be done to slow down the fading process. The first step is to purchase a high-quality flag material that has UV-resistance.
If you’ve already purchased a flag then you can spray it with a UV fabric protector. This’ll create a layer on the fabric that prevents the UV rays from harming the material directly. It also protects the fabric from dust. Also, make sure you store your fabric in a covered, dry, and dark place to prevent fading when in storage.
Weather is a major factor that affects the longevity of your flag. Elements such as strong wind, rain, and hail can cause a lot of damage to the flag. It’s advisable that you lower the flag during strong winds to protect it from stretching too much and from the flying debris.
It’s obvious that over time your flag will suffer some wear and tear. Make sure you inspect the fabric regularly to identify any damage or tears. The bottom right-hand corner of the flag is most vulnerable to damage so keep an eye on it. In case the flag is damaged, be sure to repair it immediately before it’s completely ruined.
To keep the colors bright and vibrant, clean your flag regularly. The accumulation of dirt not only makes your flag look dull, it also affects the strength of the fabric’s fibers and makes the material weaker. Wash it with a mild detergent to retain the brightness of the colors and to maintain the strength of the fabric.
