The U.S. National Anthem proclaims America “The land of the free, and the home of the brave,” and rightly so. Few people deserve as much respect, gratitude, and recognition as the brave men and women who put their lives in danger to serve their beloved homeland in the U.S. military.
Veterans are a group of upstanding individuals who courageously and selflessly served the nation in its time of need. Putting their own wellbeing and needs aside, these people defended our country and helped it reach the peak it’s at today.
Veterans Day, observed on November 11th, exists to celebrate and cherish those who served the U.S. military and were honorably discharged after serving their time. Here are a few ways you can show your gratitude to veterans for their service.
Thank Them in Person
Saying “thank you” may not seem like much but a sincere and heartfelt ‘thank you’ is an honest expression of gratitude. On Veterans Day, you can easily recognize veterans as they’ll be donning some type of military clothing item. Go up to them and thank them profusely and sincerely for all their efforts. This one brief yet meaningful gesture can go a long way.
Visit a Retired Veteran
Bring some joy and happiness into a retired veteran’s life by visiting them at a local retirement home. Your visit will mean a lot to them. You can bring them food or baked goodies and ask them to share their stories from the past. Your 30-minute minute visit can put a smile on their face for the whole day!
Make a Donation
There are a number of wonderful organizations and charities that help struggling veterans live their lives well. You can pick one out and donate to them. If you are able to, you can also organize a fundraising event to generate large amounts of funds to donate to charities that help veterans.
Show Up to Events
There’s bound to be a Veterans Day event planned in your area. Make sure you show up to the event to offer your support and show your gratitude. You can attend a Veterans Day parade and cheer them on to show your gratitude.
Write to Them
Another way of expressing appreciation for veterans is by writing to them. Send a postcard or an e-card to a veteran you know, and if you don’t know one, you can always send a letter to soldier serving currently by looking them in a nearby military installation. Receiving a token of appreciation, even anonymously, can mean a lot.
Fly a Flag
On Veterans Day, fly a flag – the correct way! Veterans Day provides a great opportunity for flying the Star - Spangled Banner sky-high. It is a way of showing gratitude to not only the veterans, but the nation as a whole.
