Who should display the flag?

All public institutions and all polling stations during the elections as well as schoolhouses should display the American flag.

Some people also like to display the flag in their homes and outside their workplaces.

Any individual who wants to showcase their patriotism should not be hesitant to hang the flag either indoors or outside their building.

General guidelines

Here are a few general guidelines of hanging the flag followed by ideas for hanging them either outdoors.

  • If a flag is displayed protruding from the building, the union should be at the top of the staff.
  • If not suspended from a staff the flag should be laid flat indoors as well as outdoors. Otherwise, you should make sure that it’s displayed in a way that one side of the flag flows freely.
  • On a stage, the flag should be placed behind a speaker and the union should be to the left of the observer.
  • In a church or auditorium, the flag on a staff should hold the most honorable position and to the right of the person addressing the audience while they face them.

Outdoors On a horizontal rope

You can hang the flag in a vertical position making sure that the canton is as far away from the building as possible.

Make sure that the union is always on the top and to the right of the flag.

If you place it in the street then make sure it points to the North or East.

On a pole

A flag on top of the pole can be placed both horizontally and diagonally from a wall. It can have other flags below it or other flags on different staffs.

When placing it with other flags, make sure that the American flag is the first and furthest away. Also make sure that all flags are the same size and are at the same height.

There are a few don’ts of hanging the flag that should be mindful of such as:

  • Don’t leave the flag hanging at night because it should fly during the day or when there is light.
  • Don’t leave the flag out to avoid ruining it during harsh weather conditions.
