Design and Meaning of the German Flag

The flag of Germany features three horizontal bands of color. Going from the top down, they are black, red and gold. These colors are said to represent Germany's struggle for freedom going from black (darkness and servitude) through the red of bloody struggle to gold - the color of the stars.

Although these colors have long been a part of German culture and history, dating to before the Napoleonic wars in the 19th century, the current German flag design wasn't  officially adopted by the country of Germany until after World War I, during the Wiemar republic.
