British Flag: Design, History & Meaning
The Union Flag combines the crosses of the three countries united under one sovereign: St George's upright red cross edged in white for England, St Andrew's white diagonal saltire on blue for Scotland, and St Patrick's red diagonal saltire for Northern Ireland. Wales is not represented because it was already united with England when the first design was created in 1606.
The first Union Flag was created in 1606 after James VI of Scotland became James I of England, combining the crosses of St George and St Andrew. The current version dates from 1801, when St Patrick's cross was added after the Act of Union with Ireland.
It is called the Union Flag on land and traditionally the Union Jack when flown from a warship's jackstaff. The design is asymmetrical: when flying it, the wider white diagonal stripe must sit uppermost on the side nearest the pole.
What are the three crosses on the Union Jack?
The three crosses are St George's Cross for England, St Andrew's Saltire for Scotland, and St Patrick's Saltire for Northern Ireland.
What is the correct way to display the Union Jack?
Display the flag with the wider white diagonal stripe uppermost on the side nearest the pole. This ensures the flag is flown in its correct orientation.
