Greek Flag: Design, History & Meaning
The Greek flag has nine alternating blue-and-white stripes: five blue and four white. They are widely held to stand for the nine syllables of “Eleftheria i thanatos” (“Freedom or Death”). The plain white cross in the blue canton represents Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
First adopted as a naval ensign in March 1822 during the Greek War of Independence, the blue-and-white striped flag became Greece’s sole national flag in 1978.
What does the white cross on the Greek flag mean?
The white cross represents Eastern Orthodox Christianity, a central part of Greece’s history and cultural identity.
Why does Greece have two flags?
Greece historically used two national flags: the blue flag with a white cross for use on land and the striped flag for maritime use. In 1978, the striped flag became the country’s sole national flag.
