Italian Flag: Design, History & Meaning
The Italian flag, known as il Tricolore, has three equal vertical stripes of green, white, and red, with green at the hoist. It was first adopted by the Cispadane Republic on January 7, 1797, the first Italian sovereign state to use a tricolour. The design was created on the model of the French tricolour during Napoleon's Italian campaigns of the 1790s.
The colors are widely understood to represent green for hope and Italy's plains and hills, white for faith and the snow-capped Alps, and red for the blood shed in the Wars of Independence and Unification. Article 12 of the Constitution of the Italian Republic officially establishes the Italian flag as the national flag.
What do the colors of the Italian flag mean?
Green is commonly associated with hope and Italy's plains and hills; white with faith and the snow-capped Alps; and red with the blood shed in the Wars of Independence and Unification.
Why is the Italian flag green, white and red?
The green, white, and red tricolour was adopted by the Cispadane Republic in 1797, modeled after the French tricolour during Napoleon's Italian campaigns.
