Virginia Flag: Design, History & Meaning
The Virginia state flag displays the obverse of the Virginia seal on a dark blue field. A Virginia-creeper wreath surrounds the seal.
At the center is Virtus, the Roman goddess of virtue, shown in Amazon dress with a spear and sword. She stands over the prostrate figure of Tyranny. The motto Sic semper tyrannis means “thus always to tyrants.”
George Wythe's committee designed the seal in July 1776. The flag was first used as a military rallying symbol in April 1861 and was standardized by the Virginia General Assembly on February 1, 1950.
Who is the lady on the Virginia flag?
The woman is Virtus, the Roman goddess of virtue. Her position over Tyranny represents Virginia's commitment to liberty.
Why does Virginia's flag say Sic Semper Tyrannis?
The Latin motto means “thus always to tyrants.” It expresses the principle that tyranny will be defeated by virtue and liberty.

I bought the Marines flag due to their upcoming November 10th 250th anniversary for a very deserving proud Marine. He loves it!! He hung it on his porch as soon as he received it. He said it was very nicely made, also that it was made in the USA was a definite plus. He also loved the fact it was an all weather flag. His original flag was made of cloth and couldn't hold up to the TN weather. This being my second flag purchased from you, I'll recommend your company to anyone looking to purchase a flag!
I couldn't be happier with everything that I have bought from Federal Flags. My 25' flagpole was something I have always wanted and the flags, hardware, instructions are top quality! Being made in the U.S.A and veteran owned are a big deal for me too!
Love the California flag. It’s a little big - larger than our American flag but we still love it. Ordering was easy and price was good. And we like that it’s made in America!
PS - And my name in Barbara - not sure where they got Mickey
I love you carried the old MN flag the new one was shoved down out throats, and am none too happy. Not to mention it really looks like the Somali flag. No thanks! You keep making old MN flag and I will keep buying!! Thank-you!!
I bought a Betsy Ross flag 250 ‘we the people’ not knowing it was not 2 sided but had the mirror look on one side. I thought the web site could have described the flag better. I mailed the flag back which ups cost was $18. The more i learn about flags I understand the mirror look on one of the sides is common. I like the MIA PoW flag. It’s double sided and beautifully done. Would be nice to have that option with a Betsy Ross 250.
