Believe it or not, flying your flag—or even just having one—can be complicated. There are many flag codes to keep in mind that determine where you should fly a flag, how you should fly it, and even how to properly take care of a flag. Finding the best location for your home's flagpole can be daunting because there are so many factors to juggle. Some of these tips may seem strange, but if you follow them, you'll know the optimal place to put the flag pole for your house.

Honor Flag Codes

Flag codes are federally regulated standards for how one should own and handle a flag. While they aren't enforced—for instance, you won't likely go to jail for dropping a flag on the floor—they give you a guide to proper flag etiquette. Luckily, flag codes have clues that indicate the optimal place to put your flag.

You should never place a flagpole in a place that lacks sunlight. Flying your flag at night or in shady areas isn't ideal. You should also never fly it in inclement weather. Since rain can be unpredictable, it might be wise to put your flag on a porch or under a canopy where it can fly without getting wet. You shouldn't place it on the roof, either, as it can get dirty or take rain or wind damage.

Watch Your Utilities

Utilities can greatly influence where you position a flag. Overall, your flag shouldn't be hampered by pole placement. This means that power and telephone lines shouldn't obstruct the flag, nor should the flag touch any water pipes. These things can all have a detrimental effect on your flag and, potentially, your home. Flag poles are usually made of metal which can pose a danger of conducting electricity to the wrong place.

Consider Your Yard

Don't forget that installing a flagpole is also an aesthetic choice. Make sure you fly your flag high in the air. Make sure it's unobstructed by trees as well. You want people to see it, after all. If you want to plant the pole in the ground, make sure to put it in a place where it won't damage tree roots. You don't want your patriotism to come at a cost to nature. These tips should help you find the best location for your flagpole.
