Yes — if the flag stays up. The U.S. Flag Code (4 U.S.C. §6a) states that the universal custom is to display the flag from sunrise to sunset. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
So you have two options: take the flag down each evening, or light it. The Code doesn’t define “properly illuminated,” but the accepted standard is simple — there should be enough light on the flag that a casual observer can recognize it as the American flag from a reasonable distance. How to Aim a Ground Spotlight
A light pointed at the pole isn’t the same as a light pointed at the flag. Three tips:
- Aim where the flag flies, not where it hangs. Set the light a few feet out from the base and angle it toward the area the flag occupies in a typical breeze — generally the upper third of the pole on the downwind side of your prevailing wind.
- Wider is more forgiving. If your light has an adjustable focus, a flood setting covers the flag through wind shifts; a tight spot looks dramatic but can miss.
- Check it at night. Stand at the street after dark. If you can clearly recognize the flag, you’re properly illuminated. If you see a lit pole and a dark flag, adjust the angle.
Getting the Most from Solar
- Give the panel full sun. Ground units: face the panel south, clear of shrubs and shadows. Top lights sit above everything, which is one reason they charge so reliably.
- Keep the panel clean. Pollen and dust cut charging more than most people expect — a wipe every month or two keeps runtime up.
- Expect shorter winter runtime. Shorter days mean less charge. If your flag must be lit all night, every night, year-round — especially on a commercial site — that’s the case for a hardwired beacon.
