Mexican Flag: Design, History & Meaning
The Mexican flag has three vertical stripes in green, white and red. It was adopted in 1821 after Mexico won independence from Spain, with the current version standardized in 1968.
Its national emblem shows a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a rattlesnake. The image comes from the Aztec founding legend: the wandering Mexica were told to build their capital where they saw an eagle on a cactus. They did so on an island in Lake Texcoco, founding Tenochtitlan, today Mexico City.
The colors are popularly read as green for hope and independence, white for unity, and red for the blood of national heroes.
What does the eagle on the Mexican flag mean?
The eagle represents the sun and victory, as well as the founding omen in the legend of Tenochtitlan.
Why does the Mexican flag look like Italy's?
Both flags use a green, white and red tricolor layout, but Mexico's flag carries its national emblem in the center stripe and predates Italy's 1946 adoption.
