Commercial flag poles to come in two primary configurations - external rope halyard and internal cable halyard. External halyard poles are the most common and affordable option. They feature a rope that is entirely on the outside of the pole. Internal halyard poles offer a much higher level of security and aesthetics. On these poles, the halyard retracts into the pole as you wind a winch handle to raise the flag. When the flag is fully raised, the halyard is invisible, except for the portion attached to the flag. It creates and extraordinarily clean appearance. And the risk of theft of your flag is almost non-existent.
The most popular flagpole material is aluminum. That's because aluminum is extremely strong, yet light weight. It never rusts and can be expected to last for decades. Other flagpole materials include steel and fiberglass. Steel is the only choice for flagpoles over 100ft tall. That's because aluminum and fiberglass to not have sufficient strength at that height. Steel flagpoles can be as much as 400 ft tall! Fiberglass flag poles, finally, are a good choice for coastal applications. There's just something about a fiberglass commercial flagpole that seems appropriate near the ocean.
When selecting your commercial flag pole, consider the height and strength that aligns with your installation location. Height is mostly a matter of personal preference. However, it's worth attempting to strike a balance between the height of your commercial flagpole and the nearby buildings. We have a height guide available here. Whatever height you choose, it's extremely important to get a flagpole that's strong enough for your part of the country. From any commercial flagpole page on our site, you can find a wind speed map. This map will show you how strong your pole should be (i.e. what wind speed rating it should have). Consult that map and choose a pole that meets or exceeds the recommended wind speed rating for your area and you'll buy with complete confidence.
