A Few Ways to Display the American Flag Respectfully and Creatively

2 min read

According to the U.S. Flag Code, the American flag is representative of a living country and so by extension, it is a living thing itself. The Star Spangled Banner is an important emblem for the nation; it is what represents us worldwide.

According to the National Retail Federation, a total of 150 million national flags are sold every year and 75% of Americans own the American flag.

Being such an important part of our national identity, it’s important that we display our national flag keeping the proper code and etiquettes in mind. We all proudly display the flag in our homes and offices, but there are a lot of creative ways to respectfully display the flag.

Let’s take a look at some of the ways you can spruce up your flag displays.

A Flag Planter

If you have a large planter either indoors or outdoors, you can display a few small stick flags in the planter, depending upon how big it is. Add an element of patriotic pride to your garden by creating a flag planter display. You can get as creative as you like; use a large vase with colorful pebbles and sand for a creative display.

Off the Balcony

There’s no sight better than the American flag hanging majestically off a balcony outside a home. This is a classic and vintage way of respectfully displaying your flag. Let your flag hang regally off the banister. If it’s a special occasion, such as an important federal holiday, you can even hang multiple flags from your balcony.

A Flag-Lined Sidewalk or Pathway

This is a great idea for important patriotic holidays such as the 4th of July or Flag Day. A flag-lined walkway is a classic look. Nothing can put you in a more patriotic mood than walking up to your home with either side of the sidewalk lined with our national flag. You can even incorporate the flag colors into your landscaping. A display of red, white and blue pebbles alongside the flags would look lovely.

A Flag Curtain

Who knew window dressing could be made so meaningful? To spruce up the appearance of your home’s interiors, you can line the windows with a large flag curtain. You can add an extra piece of fabric with loops to tie it all up into a proper display.

A Framed Flag

A framed flag is as stately as it gets. Hanging a framed flag in any room will give it a ceremoniously decorative feel. Antique and barn wood frame will give your flag display an added vintage look. Just make sure you’re framing the flag with the union blue stars positioned on the upper left, as stated under the flag etiquettes.
